So don’t drink milk for health. I am convinced on the weight of the scientific evidence that it does not “do a body good.” Inclusion of milk will only reduce your diet’s nutritional value and safety. ~ Dr. Kradjian
Hey all you wonderful people out there! Who all LOVES milk? ME! Well, I did until I found out that what we were being told was good for us was actually hurting us. Oh, and all the nasty stuff that is allowed to stay in while processing it..GROSS!
First of all, cow milk is designed for baby cows like human milk is designed for human babies and it is quite strange that we are the only species that drink another species milk and we drink it into adulthood. The milk of each species is unique and tailored to the requirements of that species. Cow milk is made up of about 15% protein and has a high mineral content which is designed to make a baby calf grow into a huge cow. Human milk is made up of 5-6% protein has a lower mineral content but is higher in essential fatty acids and is designed to help babies grow into adult humans. Infants double in size in their first 6 months of life solely on mothers milk with 5-6% protein, so why do we think as adults we need so much more protein that this?(I will do a whole blog post on this topic!!) Once a cow weans itself from its mother milk it eats it’s species specific diet and thrives on that for the rest of its life. It has no need for its mothers milk anymore and the same goes for humans. We are not designed to continue drinking milk once we have weaned ourselves from our mothers milk. We should thrive on our species specific diet of fruit, veggies and leafy greens. Since most of us continue to consume milk into childhood and adulthood we are causing many health problems that could easily be avoided.
So, you might be thinking well what about calcium? Yes, milk does have calcium in it, but the question is… is it worth all the other side effects? I made the decision 2 1/2 years ago that it was not worth it to me, and let me tell you, I LOVED milk. I would have a glass in the morning with my breakfast, and a glass in the evening for dinner not to mention the amount of cheese I ate. Oh my gosh did I eat some cheese. One of my favorite breakfasts growing up was a bagel, toasted, with butter and then melted cheese. For lunch, a sandwich with miriclewhip, cheese and meat, a cup of apple sauce and a bag of Doritos (either nacho cheese, or cool ranch). Of course dinner varied, but there was always the cup of milk. So, let me get to the side effects of milk & dairy, as well as some of the GROSS stuff about it.
Puss…GROSS! You know that stuff that comes out of a pimple. Well the National Milk Producers Federation allows 750,000 somatic cells(Pus cells) per ml which means that an 8oz glass of milk has 180 million pus cells. (http://www.nmpf.org/latest-news/news-dairy-coops/2013-05-12) Umm… NO THANK YOU! Those suffering from acne and other skin irritations usually see great improvement in their skin when they eliminate dairy.
Milk increases mucus production. Those that suffer from allergies, sinus issues, ear infections and asthma find that their symptoms improve when they eliminate dairy from their diet. Think about how much money in over the counter medicines, prescription drugs and doctor visits you could save just by eliminating dairy! Check out this 1 min video clip from Dr. Greger Milk & Mucus for more detailed information on how milk increases mucus production.
Casein, the animal protein in milk promotes the growth of CANCER. In the book The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, an american biochemist, he states that in peer- reviewed animal studies, researchers could turn the growth of cancer on and off by adjusting the amount of casein they gave the animal. The same study was done with plant protein, and the cancer either stayed the same, or decreased in size. I highly recommend reading his book The China Study and/or watching Forks Over Knives which can be watched on Netflix, Amazon and iTunes.
Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone or rBGH is a synthitic hormone that is marketed to dairy farmers to increase milk production in cows. This increase in milk production tends to cause infections in the udders of the cow therefore more antibotics are administered which could lead to more antibiotic resistant bacteria. Also, consumers who drink milk with from a cow who was given rBGH are at higher risk for cancer. Here is an article from the American Cancer Society on rBGH. So then you could just buy Raw or Organic right? NO! Milk has naturally occurring hormones that are not meant to be in the human body. This excess of hormones causes inflamation in the body which puts you at a higher risk for disease. One of these hormones IGF-1 (Insulin like growth factor) makes our bodies produce more growth hormones which can cause cancer cells to grow.
Milk has been linked to all kinds of diseases. Type 1 diabetes, obesity, autoimmune diseases and cancer to name a few. It is high in saturated fat which leads to an array of other diseases and is low in fiber which causes digestion issues, constipation and gas.
All this for calcium? Totally not worth it and not necessary. Calcium is a mineral that comes from the ground so you can get plenty of calcium through vegetables and leafy greens. Make green smoothies, and big salads each day and you have your calcium covered. Smoothies are a great way for kids to get their calcium. Make them a green smoothie everyday for breakfast instead of that glass of milk, or they make a great afternoon snack as well. Here is my Go to Green Smoothie. Belle loves this and I usually add avocado to hers for a little good fat.
Now I know some of you are like “There is no way I could give up milk or CHEESE.” YES, you can. I used to think that too! Believe me if you set your mind to it you can do it. Remember, I loved glasses of milk with my meals, cheese on everything and now I don’t have any and have not for a couple of years. I know it is additive because that is what it is supposed to be. A mothers milk is addictive so its little one comes back for more. Educate yourself more, and then when you are tempted remind yourself why you decided to not have that in your diet anymore. Eventually it will not temp you anymore. Also, there are a ton of alternatives that are great. Try some out if you want or just stick to more whole foods. I tend to just stick to more whole plant foods but have an occasional alternative.
Please take the time to check out the links above, and the following ones below. Some of the info is long, so grab your lunch and watch it at your desk on your break, or watch once you have your little ones down. Thanks for taking the time to read and educate.
MILK and dairy is NOT a HEALTH food and we need to change the way it is portrayed as one… Especially in our schools that feed our children and teach them that it is.
Please share this with friends and family. You never know who this can help.
